Class divide within a community called "Software Guys"..

When we see the software, ITES industry we can see two sections of the class are emerging within the software world. One is the capital class while another can be aptly named cattle class!

The capital class is one which might joined the software world in ‘90s era when Software was the still world of those who scored 90+ in maths, easily got the H1B Visa or Green card, settled in US, UK, Europe, earning in Dollars and spending in rupees. Or maybe these class also include the present day people who graduated from a “A” grade colleges. These guys/ gals wont mind handing out 250 to autowallas for a distance of 30 rs for normal public. And can hand over rs 100 note to coconut vendor who bring the tender coconut till their car window. These are the class who normally “responsible” for irrational increase in inflation, rentals, salary of maids in an area which hitherto a very normal area.

Then another class is one who graduated from thousands of engineering colleges, who are placed in the Jatras (fair) called Campus placement, who spent 4-6 months in training, another 4-6 month in thankless activity called “Bench”. These are the guys whose daily life itself a movement. These are the guys who either travel in overcrowded city buses, or paid transport of their companies.

Even in affluent capital class software's there are two sub classes. One those who stil have “Desi saunskruti/ Sanskaar” in their blood. They eat in hotels like MTR in Blore, Saravan Bhavan in Chennai etc where bill is not less than any star buck café but actually a desi hi class hotel. Another sub class may be as said one which drinks coffee in Star bucks, breakfast in subway and lunch in Pizza hut, Dinner in Chinatown!

And cattle class software guy always used to eat in roadside canteen, mess etc and stay in group wit friends, classmates etc.
The alarming thing is the cattle class following the capital class. And the companies also lure them with Rs 49 burger, Rs 55 Pizza or Rs 99 McMeal! Fun thing is these offers are just to let them inside! Once they are inside, when chick sitting next to them eating 299 burger do they eat 99 wala? And ironically these cattle class get the blame as “these software guys behave like extraterrestrial species, spend lavishly, don’t know money value blah blah blah!!”

EXPERIENCE @ A V DHAMMANGI FOOD PRODUCTS

By Nachiket A Hanmantgad

Myself, Ashok and Anand had a exiting time as Sales Executive of A V Dhammanagi
Food Products. “Sales Executive” is the designation which we our self have given! In
about 45 days of experience, we met new people daily, interacted with them,
convinced them, and some times even argued. We can never forget those days; they
were the days when each day was like a adventure and a learning experience.

It all started when Chetna madam called every one of BBA 2nd SEM to her chamber.
We all went with a question mark on our faces as we didn’t have clue why we were
called. By seeing madam’s smiling face we realized that we were here for a good
reason. Then madam briefed about the internship program, she said about the
four departments i.e. Bakery, Transport, Kitchen and Canteen. She also said that
remuneration would be paid. We listened but to be frank we did not understand
what madam had said, as we never thought we could earn while in college.
Then evening meeting was called for all those who are interested in internship.

Principal Sir briefed about the departments and asked us to select whichever we are interested in. The remuneration was fixed as Rs500 per month plus incentives. We selected the Bakery and Rakesh sir
was made our mentor. The meeting ended at 7.30 PM and we were about leave. As
we came out of AV hall Rakes Sir called us (The Bakery Team).
We never knew Rakesh Sir is such a tough person. As soon as we came out he took us
to the bakery and introduced us to people over there, we met Mallikarjun who is in
charge of bakery and canteen for in house sales. Then he assigned our roles. He said
to Ashok “You are the Chips manager, right from production, packing, quality, to
sales you are responsible”. Anand was made order processor and I was assigned sales
of Bread. I and Ashok were supposed to pass the orders to Anand. Anand with being
order processor he was responsible for sales of bakery products in Old and New
Dhammangi Textile shops. All this was an entirely new responsibility for us.
The next day as usual we went to the college, and in afternoon Rakesh sir asked us
“What’s the order for today?” We did not have any, so we were telling sir that we
went home late from college and morning we came to college... etc etc. But sir said he
doesn’t want reasons just the result. Then we realized that in companies result are
important and we are judged by our results.

First day of work
Fortunately the next day was Sunday, and we all three together set
out to take orders. Initially we were hesitant to speak with the shopkeepers; we did not
know how to start. We even went to some shops and instead of speaking about our
products we bought something and came. Then we realized that we need to start and
Anand being a bit bold amongst us started the conversation, we were glad he did it.
That day we roamed almost whole Bailhongal and tool the order of 50 breads, 15Kg
chips. We were pretty happy and Anand passed the order to Mallikarjun.
Following day was a hectic one; it was the day of delivering the products. We were
given the Tata Sumo and the driver, and the timing was between 6.30 to 7.30. At 7.30
vehicles should be free for school. And within just one hour we had to deliver the
products, collect cash, give the bill, and take signature on the slip. As we were three
of us we did it. But that one hour was of great tense.

Parents happy!
Same thing continued for about two weeks. In two weeks we understood all the
concepts of marketing in better way like 4P’s of Marketing, Communication skills,
management concepts like planning, organizing, decision making, co ordination etc.
More importantly we understood how a company or corporate world works. We  understood that we need to concentrate only on our works first and should not were happy but our parents we also
happy, first reason they were happy because we all were in our house before
8 p.m. Another reason was we were not even having glance at T.V. Daily we
used to plan out strategies for next day.

Lessons Learnt:
One of the most important thing that we
learnt was that we understood how a company works, why there is a Hierarchy? What
qualities are needed to move up the hierarchy? We had the great time interacting with
Rakesh sir. He is a sea of knowledge. He thought us what was not there in any books.
He told us way to approach different customers, each day we would report him the
days progress and he would analyze and motivate us. Some of the tips that he gave us
were, “Never think shop keeper is doing favor by buying from you, let him buy it or
leave it, we are not short of market” “Do not negotiate on phone, always strike deal in
person, and finish it in first meet do not keep pending” etc .

After two weeks:
After two weeks, I was shifted to Yargatti area. It’s a village about 30 Km from
Bailhongal. Anand was responsible for sales in Bailhongal. Anand roamed nook and
corner of Bailhongal was generating huge sales.
I had a very tough time in Yargatti. The market was not like Bailhongal. The market
was dominated by brand called BIG BREAD, a Dharwad based Bread Company. In
the first day I did not get even one bread order, I could get only 5 Kg chips order. The
reason why shops were not accepting was that Kalpavruksha Bread dealer price was
Rs 13 per bread and MRP was Rs 15. But Big Bread dealer price was Rs14 and MRP
was 18. The shop keepers were getting margin of Rs 4 per bread were as we were
giving margin of Rs 2. Though they agreed to us that our products quality, taste,
packing was all better but they wanted margin.

I discussed with Rakesh sir about the market. He being from Yargatti, he also studied
the market. Then he told that we need to apply mind. He used to always say that
Business is the mind game and he said all of us to come out with a game plan to crack
the Yargatti market.
Anand and Ashok also had a tough time. There sales was increasing day by day but
they were short of one man to handle. As I would travel to Yargetti.
While traveling to Yargatti I had a wonderful time. I used to go in the school bus. I
enjoyed playing with kids while on the move. I felt sad when I denied giving chips to
them as Mallikarjun would weigh the chips at least three times before handing it over
to me. Even now some of the kids recognize and speak to me in campus.
After two weeks, i.e. fourth week, along with Yargatti, Belwadi market was also
assigned to me. It’s a village about 20 Km from Bailhongal towards Dharwad. It’s
smaller market than Yargatti but very promising one. On the first day itself I got order
of 50 pound bread and 5kg Chips.

Expansion plans:
As mentioned earlier about Yargatti
market, we wanted to break open the
market. And out of our continues
discussion we arrived at idea of
advertising and test marketing. We had
decided to conduct medical checkups
in villages as CSR (Corporate Social
Responsibility) program surrounding
Yargatti along with IMA (Indian
Medical Association) Bailhongal and
distribute our products for free to the
people. So that people taste out product
and demand the same in market. We
were going to follow it up by setting up
kiosks during market days. We had
even designed the banners and pamphlets
In Bailhongal, Rakesh sir had asked us to do a 2 minute video advertisement and we
were working on it too. We had an ambitious plan of getting our own (AVD food
product’s) TATA ACE vehicle so that we could deliver products whenever we want.

Weekly report:
Every Saturday evening 4 P.M was the time for presenting our weekly report.
Principal Sir, Chetna madam, Rakesh sir and all other lecturers would be present.
Each and every slide would be thoroughly analyzed and questions would be poured
on us. As it was not as tough as answering the shopkeepers we could handle it easily.
Suggestions like producing different flavors of chips, weight of chips etc arise and we
serious considered some of them.

Remuneration:
During third week of March we were called to Principal Sir Chamber. All three of us
went. As we entered Principal Sir said “Congratulation!” to us and handed over a
envelop. We did not have clue that it would be our salary. We realized it when we felt
the coins inside the envelope. As usual Principal sir gave guidance for 10 mins. We
were delighted to receive and expecting it to be RS 500 we were surprised to see that
It was Rs 315. With hesitation we went and asked Rakesh Sir. He opened the
attendance sheet and asked us to make calculation. However we made the calculation
the amount was arriving less than what was given to us. Actually we were absent on 2
days to college and 2 days I was involved in college fest. Though during fest Anand
had delivered products he received one day salary more. Still we were happy and
went home and showed the money to parents proudly.

Changed the thinking:
After we started working at A V D food products, our thinking was changed. Instead
of discussing stupid topics during our spare time we were discussing on trapping new
customers, instead of roaming here and there we were going to some of residential
schools so that we could trap big customer.
Ashok once was speaking about starting his own Milk Diary after graduating, he had
even discussed with his parents and his B plan was ready.
Anand had firmly decided that he is going to do Business .
Unknowingly each day I would visit websites of FMCG companies like HUL, ITC,
and Dabur etc and study their products and their CEO, Marketing Heads, their
qualification, how did they get there. I was surprised to see that all Top management
of most of the companies started their career as Sales Trainee( Same as sales
executive).

Though none of us speak like that now, but we really miss that work, committement,
attitude within us.

All Good things come to end:
As the saying goes “All good things must come to end” one fine day as we went to
college we were shocked to know that Bakery products would not be sold
commercially. The bakery was started for school purpose and hence it would be used
for school only. We had a bad time for us . We were sad and dishearten, upon that the
customers were troubling as they had stopped buying from earlier supplier and were
dependent on us. Some how we managed and got back to old routine.
About 45 days of working in AVD food products was the best moment of our life and
can never forget the lessons learnt.

It lead to a new type of hunger within us, a hunger to succeed, hunger to move up, a hunger which will stay as along as we are alive.

We thank whole heartedly Rakesh Sir, Principal Sir, Campus Director, CAO,
Chairman and all the management team of Kalpavruksha Institute of Management
Studies for providing us the opportunity to have such a wonderful experience.

Stop illegal constructions within the property and the buffer zone area (namely in Hampi Village and Virupapura Gada Island), and control and manage other planned developments, such as social housing projects, to ensure that they do not have a negative impact on the integrity of the landscape...

Metro Rail is not people friendly (English translation of my post in Udayavani Kannada daily)

As I reside in Pune, I had long time “urge” to travel in Bangalore metro once! And my urge became reality when I recently had a chance to visit Bangalore for a day quick visit! And I able to ride the metro and fulfill my long pending wish. And when I complete it, this is what I felt:
Kishore Biyani of Future group or Big Bazaar has written a book called “It Happened in India”. And in that book he states “The first bad thing that retailers set is bad appearance and bad entry in a bid to make it Grand. If you make a shop with always closed glass door, keep a security guard with dark uniform, complete with tie and rich metal filled cap and a black stick, you perfectly hit a disaster. People will think your shop in “Beyond their level” and will just “move on”. You will be having rich but deserted shop! And we can see host of such shops in all typical malls. But a shop with simple but more welcoming entrance make people feel connected, and eventually customer will walk in with pride and without ego hurt. Big Bazaar ensures that pride in common people”.
And coming to Metro station, we can say metro station looks more like Hi Fi mall than a railway station. It has all the ingredients at perfect combinations to keep the mass away. First he as to cross the great MG Road, then comes the glass door with metal detectors and security guards donning the look of black cat commandos, then comes the hi fi sign boards, then the ticketing staff who welcomed me in English! Do you think the ordinary daily laborer/ ground staff who travels mainly in public transport comes to ride metro?
It’s not without proof. Else BMTC buses plying on old madras road would have been empty and all passengers would have been in Metro. But why the situation is reverse? Do people really love the snail speed of BMTC over quick reaching in Metro?
Now you may ask don’t we need sophistication, cleanliness standard? My answer is just visit Kempegowda Central Bus terminus, or Shantinagar, Mysore road bus stand. They are no less in terms of hygienic, cleanliness. But they are not end up becoming glitter mansions; they have become people’s mansions.
If the Metro rail don’t change its Glitter mansion image to peoples mansion, soon there is a danger of Metro being used for Jolly ride and uploading photo in facebook, just like what I did!

Soap to Cream - Changing Times Changing Priorities!!

My resposne to Economic Times article (Click below link for artice:

______________________________________________________________________________-

HUL's strategy of focussing more on Beauty and Grooming is quiet well thought out act but late in implementing. Because I think detergent market was saturated and became less growth driver a decade back! I remember when I was still in undergraduate during 2005 something then only we discussed in the college and came to conclusion that most saturated and competitive market in India is Detergent. You will find hundereds of local brands, National brands and adding up to this are the counterfeit brands!

In such a scenerio I would expected companies to change the stragegies and concentrate more on lucrative and high margin categoires like B&G!

Due to globalisation, gaining more purchasing power by the Indian middle class due to evolving newer job opportunities thrown out by the ITES revolution are said to be boon in disguise for the FMCG/CPG cos who are looking desperately other avenues of growth.

Emergence of SOcial Media-Change in Media strategy:
Coming to other point, emergence of social media in the recent years is changing the landscape of the media reach by any industry. More and more companies are raching out and publicly displaying to follow them on facebook or twitter! With mushrooming TV Channels and viewer having more than what he can take, effectiveness of the TVC is always unpredictable and always a challenge.

On the other hand social media may prove to be more practical with the the option of fine tuning the target and reaching out to the accurate segment. And engaging in social media will be more direct with two way communication where in companies can connect with consumers directly and more effectively. It will prove to be economical and more satisfying as you are fine tuning your reach and reaching to more accurate and target audience!

There is no dounbt Internet will soon start posong a major challenge to the Television media ditto in the same way the news channels posed their threat to the Print media! With the bebefit of reaching to accurate target audience, and more effective measure of the effectiveness of campaign and direct consuer connect it seems social media is already winning over traditional TV media.

No dount with the shift in the proprities of the FMCG/Retail companies from Soap to Cream may end up Ekta Kapoor having faebook version of KSeriesVille!!

Response to The Hindu article - Headlines you will never see

This is in response to The Hindu article. Click below link for article:
http://www.thehindu.com/arts/magazine/article2475946.ece

Its true that there are various news channels which are banking on more of non news items than the news. Apart from few 3-4 leading news channels if you wantch any other news channel either they are showing the reality show of colors/imagine channel or they are showing sme TVC advertorial. It has gone to such extent that some regional news channels always either shows the dubbed version of BBC, Animal Planet, History channels programms and also there are instances where they simply lift teh clippings from youtube videos circulating in social media!

This is the "creativity" our media organisations are showing! They stopped showing socially relevant programs long back and have became just another entertainment channel.

Why Usha Kiran was started? Truth behind having two newspapers by one media

Why Usha Kiran was started? Truth behind having two newspapers by one media

In response to article in following link:
http://column9.wordpress.com/2011/09/24/%E0%B2%B8%E0%B2%AE%E0%B2%AF-%E0%B2%AA%E0%B2%BE%E0%B2%B2%E0%B2%95%E0%B2%A8-%E0%B2%95%E0%B2%82%E0%B2%97%E0%B2%BE%E0%B2%B2%E0%B3%81-%E0%B2%AA%E0%B3%8D%E0%B2%B0%E0%B2%B8%E0%B2%82%E0%B2%97/

He started Usha Kiran for the pretty same reason why there are two channels from single co say ETV2 in AP, SUN2 in TN. When there is big gap between first and second paper by circulation there is every chance that any one will fill that gap. Vijay Sankeshvar ensure that no one able to fill that gap by putting Usha Kiran to fight with rest of newspapers while VijayKarnataka remain without any competition. And Vijay Times is no1 except Bangalore.
Now when Times killed Usha Kiran and Vijay Times its importance is evident. You can see now there is absolutely no gap between first second and third news paper! Now VijayKarnataka have to fight with Udayavani in aggressiveness and Kannadaprabha with innovation! I think already Udayavani captured the Ushakiran place in its absence. If there was Ushakiran it would have given fight to Udayavani and Vijaykarnataka would ahve been safer side.
And busniess decisions are not taken by stupid reasons at least people like him who weighs pros and cons hundred times and who is not aggressive risk taker!

A dream and a reality:

Ambani had a dream. to make phone call cheaper than postcard. He made it reality With his devotion and hard work.

Capt Gopinathan had a dream. To make Air travel cheaper than 1st AC Train. He made it rality With his hard work and dedication .

Vijay Mallya also had a dream. To make every bottle of beer cheaper than pertrol. Manmohan Singh made it reality with his ignorance and lazyness..

kannada english

Indian Retailing-One sip at a time..

My comments on Economist article (follow this link for article: http://www.economist.com/node/18560587

I was not impressed. It is yet another typical article wich ended at introductory level only! India is really moved forward from its introductory phase.

And again there need to think how much malls one city can hold? Is there room for both Reliance fresh and "Fresh" by heritage group in one location? We can find this in metros but how many metros are in town?

And entering India without studying consumer behavior will be disastrous.

In Kishor Biyanis words " We first replicated the Walmart store structure where in stores will have clear passages which will make customers easy to roam and shop. But it ended up customer entering at one point and leaving from the exit as if its a jogging track! Then we decided to create hurdles in the passage. You wont see a clear passage in any of Big Bazaar or Central mall. You have to go from one end to another end in a zig Zak lane even to go one storey down or up. It ended in better footfall converting into sales".

And this trick is still working.

Service Retailing

Services Retailing

A service is the action of doing something for someone or something. It is largely intangible (i.e. not material). A product is tangible (i.e. material) since you can touch it and own it. A service tends to be an experience that is consumed at the point where it is purchased, and cannot be owned since is quickly perishes. A person could go to a café one day and have excellent service, and then return the next day and have a poor experience.

Services Retailing is a subfield of General retailing and marketing, which can be split into the two main areas of goods marketing (which includes the marketing of fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and durables) and services marketing. Services marketing typically refer to both business to consumer (B2C) and business to business (B2B) services, and include marketing of services like telecommunications services, financial services, all types of hospitality services, car rental services, air travel, health care services and professional services.

Services are economic activities offered by one party to another. Often time-based, performances bring about desired results to recipients, objects, or other assets for which purchasers have responsibility. In exchange for money, time, and effort, service customers expect value from access to goods, labor, professional skills, facilities, networks, and systems; but they do not normally take ownership of any of the physical elements involved.

There has been a long academic debate on what makes services different from goods. The historical perspective in the late-eighteen and early-nineteenth centuries focused on creation and possession of wealth. Classical economists contended that goods were objects of value over which ownership rights could be established and exchanged. Ownership implied tangible possession of an object that had been acquired through purchase, barter or gift from the producer or previous owner and was legally identifiable as the property of the current owner.

How it different from Merchandise Retailing?

Inseparable - from the point where it is consumed, and from the provider of the service. For example, you cannot take a live theatre performance home to consume it (a DVD of the same performance would be a product, not a service).

Intangible - and cannot have a real, physical presence as does a product. For example, motor insurance may have a certificate, but the financial service itself cannot be touched i.e. it is intangible.

Perishable - in that once it has occurred it cannot be repeated in exactly the same way. For example, once a 100 metres Olympic final has been run, there will be not other for 4 more years, and even then it will be staged in a different place with many different finalists.

Variability- since the human involvement of service provision means that no two services will be completely identical. For example, returning to the same garage time and time again for a service on your car might see different levels of customer satisfaction, or speediness of work.

Right of ownership - is not taken to the service, since you merely experience it. For example, an engineer may service your air-conditioning, but you do not own the service, the engineer or his equipment. You cannot sell it on once it has been consumed, and do not take ownership of it.

Western economies have seen deterioration in their traditional manufacturing industries, and a growth in their service economies. Therefore the marketing mix has seen an extension and adaptation into the extended marketing mix for services, also known as the 7P's - physical evidence, process and people.
